Our hope is that the artwork becomes part of your experience here and something you can enjoy as you pass through, offering moments of inspiration, reflection, and connection.
We’re honored to welcome Kathleen Howsare as our next featured artist with her exhibit, Solivagant, inspired by the beauty of the local landscape and the quiet connection found in nature. From mountain snow and icy creeks to spring blossoms, changing leaves, windswept skies, and waterfalls, her paintings capture the changing seasons and familiar wild places.
For Kathleen, wandering through nature is not about escaping the world, but about feeling more deeply a part of it. Solivagant describes one who wanders alone, and through these paintings, Kathleen invites viewers to discover their own sense of belonging to the natural world.

Kathleen has been passionate about art since childhood. She began painting at age eight, later earning a degree in studio art and a teaching certificate. She taught elementary art for 30 years in Virginia and West Virginia while earning an MFA in Painting from American University.
Since retiring from teaching 13 years ago, Kathleen has devoted herself to painting, working primarily in acrylics and focusing on the rural landscapes of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. She is inspired by the French Impressionist landscape painters, as well as Vincent van Gogh and American painter John Singer Sargent. Especially drawn to trees, rivers, creeks, and old barns, Kathleen captures their changing shapes, colors, and light through a vibrant, expressive style.
Kathleen has studied landscape painting with award-winning artist Steven Walker since 2013, including a memorable painting workshop in Tuscany. Her colorful, light-filled landscapes have been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and shows, including the Cumberland Valley Exhibition and Competition and a first-place award at the Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts. Her work has also appeared at Art at the Mill and the Waterford Fair, where one of her paintings was selected for the 2024 fair brochure.
Kathleen continues to paint nearly every day, exploring new ways to simplify and strengthen her landscapes while celebrating the beauty of the rural places she loves.
